We are pleased to be the Ocarina Networks Reseller for South East Asia. This is a wonderful technology and that is why Real Data Matrix is very enthusiastic about the data optimization technology that Ocarina Networks brings to the primary storage.

First of all, I knew about Ocarina Networks several years ago. My hero, Mr. Bill Joy, sits in the Technical Advisory Board of Ocarina and that's how I got to know about Ocarina Networks. However, as we continue to improve Real Data Matrix as THE Information Infrastructure solutions and services company, the Ocarina Networks solution is one that fits very well into our solutions portfolio.

A big part of our business is with Oil and Gas industry. And the data generated by the Oil and Gas Geological & Geophysical (G&G) applications are very big, very unique and highly compressed and encoded. This means that normal deduplication solutions using block-based or sub-file deduplication will not work well with files generated by the G&G applications. And we have seen that happening in one of the largest Oil and Gas companies in Malaysia. They have NetApp, and they have Isilon and they deal with almost petabytes of files. And they are generate terabytes of files per month. Given the data deduplication technology from some of the vendors in town, they were only able to achieve a deduplication ratio of 5% of less.

We were very happy to test the Ocarina Networks simulator with the NetApp and Isilon filers and we were elated with the results. The deduplication ratio was more than 70% for NetApp and more than 30% for Isilon, each with different types of seismic files.

Ocarina Networks solution, based the ECO data optimization technology, is a game changer. Normal deduplication solutions will just segment the blocks of the file without understanding the content of the file. Compressed, encrypted and encoded files do not work well with the normal block-based data deduplication solutions because they are unable to understand the content of these compressed, encoded and encrypted files. These normal deduplication solutions only dedupe "the containers" of the files, not the content of the files.

And interestingly, many files are already compressed or encoded. Take for example, Microsoft Office 2007 or even 2003 files. They are already in some form of encoded format. Many of the files that travel through the Internet are encoded as well. Let me share with you a PowerPoint presentation I found on the web. Credits to the author of the PowerPoint slides. The diagram shows that a simple Microsoft Word file is comprised of several components that are already zipped, compressed or encoded. Therefore, without understanding the format and content of this Microsoft Word file, normal deduplication solution merely dedupe the blocks of this file, with no regards of what can be optimized.

The Ocarina Networks solution is different. Using the Extract, Correlate and Optimize (ECO) phased approach, the file is first broken up into its basic components. Any duplication or redundant components are deduplicated and referenced in the Correlate phase. Lastly, any remaining components are then further optimized and compressed with the type-specific optimizers into Ocarina Suitcases. There are more than a hundred type-specific or content specific optimizers. Therefore, there are optimizers for Office files; optimizers for Oil and Gas applications and even optimizers for encoded web files such as video streams and so on.

That is why Ocarina Networks ECO solutions are the only content aware data deduplication and data optimization in the market today.

The main benefit is you get your money back from day one. The solution is able to reclaim multiple terabytes per day. Therefore, the customer can either slow down the need to purchase more storage, OR store more with the existing storage. And best of all, Data Deduplication and optimization have been listed as the key technologies of SNIA Green Storage Initiative.
